The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive
It was the attempt of Mercedes-AMG to transfer the icon with hinged doors into the electric future while maintaining the performance level of a super sports car. Presented as a concept under the name SLS E Cell and later offered as a small series from 2013, it showed how far the brand wanted to go at the time when it comes to high-performance electromobility. Visually, the basic shape of the SLS was preserved, but under the body almost everything was new. Instead of a V8, four water-cooled synchronous electric motors worked, one per wheel. This arrangement allowed a real electric all-wheel drive with very fast regulation of the drive torques per wheel, called torque vectoring, which significantly increased traction and agility. The system performance was already 552 kW / 751 hp in 2013, the maximum torque was 1000 Newton meters and was immediately available from the first meter. Thus, the SLS AMG Electric Drive accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and was one of the fastest series electric vehicles ever when it was introduced. The maximum speed was electronically limited to 250 km/h. An important component was the lithium-ion battery with a capacity of around 60 kWh and a system voltage of 400 volts. It was housed in a T-shaped housing in the middle tunnel and behind the seats to keep the center of gravity low and optimize weight distribution. Depending on the measurement cycle, Mercedes gave a range in the range of about 250 kilometers, although significantly less was possible in sporting use, but this fit the character of this vehicle.
For the chassis, Mercedes-AMG had to design its own front car because of the battery and the four engines. A pushrod suspension, as known from racing, was used to make room and precisely control additional masses. At the same time, an elaborate recuperation worked so that the car could recover energy when it decelerating and relieve the mechanical brakes. The driver could choose different driving programs as well as levels of deceleration via recuperation, which allowed the car to be tuned from rather comfortable to very direct. In the interior, the Electric Drive remained close to the well-known SLS, but set its own accents with special displays for performance, state of charge and recuperation. An optional sound system generated an artificial driving noise on request to give the driver more feedback and make the experience more emotional, otherwise the drive worked almost silently. The technical consequence was particularly impressive, because the model was not a converted series SLS, but an independent high-performance electric sports car with special electronics, cooling and drive control. Production remained very small, probably less than 13 vehicles were built, of which less than 10 were delivered to private buyers, the rest remained in the possession of Mercedes, which makes the SLS AMG Electric Drive an extremely rare collector’s item. In retrospect, it stands for an early phase of electric mobility, in which Mercedes-AMG wanted to demonstrate that electrical performance does not mean giving up, but opens up new technical possibilities.
About the vehicle offered here:
This SLS Electric Drive was built in 2013 and delivered to Norway. There the first registration took place on the 14th. August 2013 to a well-known billionaire, who was the first owner of the vehicle. This was seen several times on the roads of Oslo, as it moved the SLS. During its time in Norway, the AMG was serviced on the following dates at Mercedes-Benz Oslo: on 25. September 2015 with 8,797 km, on 23. January 2017 with 9,691 km, on 22. June 2018 with 12,284 km and on 30. August 2019 with 13,242 km. In 2020, the SLS finally arrived in Germany, where it was on the 14th. July of the same year received a day admission by a dealer. Subsequently, the vehicle was bought by Mechatronik and was part of the in-house collection. In the meantime, on 22. June 2021 with 13,748 km and on 28. July 2023 with a mileage of 13,967 km maintenance carried out at Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach. This SLS E-Drive offers an extremely rare opportunity for every Mercedes collector. For detailed questions, our sales staff is always at your disposal. Please note that vehicle inspections are generally only possible by prior appointment.
