Keeping in line with the Ferrari tradition of that time, the 250 GT Lusso was occasionally known as the GTL, GT/L or simply Lusso meaning ‘Luxury’. Larger and more luxurious than the 250 GT Berlinetta, whilst remaining a two-seat GT coupe, the car was manufactured for only eighteen months from 1962 to late 1964. The Lusso was the last model of Ferrari 250 GT generation; with just 351 examples produced it is not only the last car to feature the 3.0 V12 but widely acclaimed as one of the most beautiful post war automobile designs, With its elegant Pininfarina styling, finely tuned chassis and powerful engine, the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso proved a fitting finale for what was arguably Ferrari’s most iconic model line. EQUIPMENT Classiche Certification, Blu Chiaro Metallic, Black Leather, Disc Brakes, Borrani Wheels, Veglia Dials, Windscreen Defroster, Lap Belts, Luggage Belts, Spare Wheel EXTERIOR With long arching curves and planes flowing off the headlights and grille the 250 Lusso represents one of Pininfarina’s most fluid designs to ever make production. The inspired Blu Chiaro accentuates the sweeping lines from nose to tail, with only minimal chrome work to disrupt the purest of profiles. As a veteran of Ferrari Owners Club Concours, Chassis 5735 is an impeccable example and looks quite remarkable under our studio lights. The jewel like Borrani’s and imposing chromed exhaust tips provide a perfect compliment to the bright metallizzato bodywork. INTERIOR The elegant Black leather lined cabin is certainly befitting of the Lusso moniker; beautiful in it’s simplicity and luxurious in it’s fit, finish and feel. Despite the more road biased ‘Luxury’ spec the combination of quilted bucket seats, delicately finished wood-rimmed wheel and canted speedo and tach create an undeniable competition pedigree. Incredibly clean with all textures matte and smooth, just climbing aboard this 250 is an experience in itself. As a two seater there is ample luggage space; Samsonite never had it so good with two leather holding straps atop cross-stitched vinyl. The boot space is predominantly occupied by a full size Borrani wheel. ENGINE & TRANSMISSION Mechanically, all Lusso’s used the 60 degree single overhead cam V12 that first saw the light of day in the early 1950’s. In this the final iteration of the 3.0L the engine, the Type 168 was topped by three DCS Weber twin choke carbs which helped to produce a very healthy 240 horsepower at 7,500rpm. Across the most recent service work with DK the correct NGK spark plugs were installed alongside ignition timing, idle mixtures and carburettor set up. After some attention to the cooling system, the exhaust received some minor fettling and a new Bosch battery was fitted with the car sitting in superb mechanical order. WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES Synonymous with Ferrari’s of this era, the beautiful deep dished Borrani wire wheels present in excellent condition, free from any burring or pitting, equipped with Pirelli Cinturato rubber. All tyres were replaced in 2022. The power disc braking system has been totally overhauled and recently been bled with the master cylinder free play adjusted. HISTORY FILE The last of 22 RHD UK supplied Lussos. It has a fascinating history and was originally owned by businessman and bon viveur William Shand Kydd who enjoyed the high life and adrenaline-fuelled sports. Kydd took part in the Cresta Run at St Moritz, where he first met Lord Lucan, raced power boats, again with Lucan, and became an amateur jockey having rode the 1966 Grand National and won the 1973 National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Kydd covered almost 60,000 miles in Chassis 5735GT in the eight years to 1972. Upon sale to a John Chatwin, who would go on to own for a further 6 years, this Lusso would go on to find it’s second celebrity owner and british motorsport royalty – Richard Attwood – Porsche’s first Le Mans winner and all-round racing superstar. Attwood achieved his longest professional relationship however with David Piper, competing in a number of green Ferraris, notably the 250 LM and the 330 P3/4. In 1987 Attwood would subsequently sell the car to Doctor Harvey Postlethwaite – Technical director for Tyrell and Sauber as well as Enzo’s hand picked chassis engineer at Ferrari. Postlethwaite was perhaps best known for being a Hesketh engineer; enabling James Hunt to clinch his first F1 victory at the 1975 Dutch Grand Prix. Postlethwaite would cherish the car as his absolute pride and joy and in 1993 commissioned a total restoration with Maranello Concessionaires. Following this restoration, he used the car only very sparingly and often showed the car at various Ferrari Owners Club Concours. After his death in 1999 and despite numerous attempts to purchase the car over the years, the family would retain ownership until 2015. With a years worth of works carried out by DK Engineering between 2021-2022, and having covered minimal mileage since, the car sits in excellent health and was proudly displayed at the 2023 Cavallino Classic event in Modena where it received the ‘People’s Choice’ award in show. All of this incredible and unrepeatable history is detailed and recorded in two very comprehensive history files, which include even the original factory-build documents and the original invoice for the new car to William Shand Kydd. Despite spending much of its life resprayed in Rosso, the car has recently been returned to its fabulous, original Blu Chiaro hue and looks absolutely exquisite in finish and form.
